History of Titanium

Titanium is the ninth most abundant element in the earth’s crust, and the fourth most abundant metallic element. The density of Titanium is approximately 56% the density of most steel/nickel alloys.

 

Titanium was discovered in 1790 when Reverend William Gregor, an amateur geologist, identified the element in black sand on the Cornish beaches of England. In 1910, American chemist M.A. Hunter succeeded in extracting titanium metal from rutile ore, which marked the birth of the titanium industry. In the 1930’s, Dr. Wilhelm Kroll invented the first viable, large-scale industrial method for reducing titanium. Today the Kroll process, as it became known, is the most widely used method of winning titanium from the ore.
